Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy and Abercrombie & Kent Australia are helping to protect one of Australia's most inspirational regions, the ancient rainforests of the Daintree. We assist Rainforest Rescue's "Buy Back and Protect Forever Project" to secure degraded rainforest land adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Site Daintree Rainforest, and to re-establish native rainforest species within the area.
A remote region of spectacular beauty in Far North Queensland, this is the only place in the world where two UNESCO World Heritage Sites meet: the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Also the largest rainforest area in Australia, it contains the highest number of plant and animal species that are rare, or threatened with extinction, anywhere in the world, and is extremely valuable.
Species endemic to the local area are planted, including fruiting plants that help sustain the endangered cassowary, a large flightless bird native to northeastern Australia. The restoration zone, which is on private property, is protected in perpetuity by the QLD (Queensland) Conservation Act.
