AKP empowers local women through community business

Overview

As a part of AKP’s larger Bike Enterprise initiatives, we are opening a new shop in Nkuringo, Uganda, on the endge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.  The shop will be owned and operated by five women who have gone through extensive training to become bike mechanics and operate a their own business enterprise. Typically, this type of job would be given to a male. Through this female-driven model, AKP empowers women to experience a new field of skills,  earn their own income, and help break the social construct of gender.

This project brings new hope to these women along with income generation and new skill set which aids them to support their families. Learn more about AKP’s worldwide Bike Shop Program.

Visit this Project

Soon you will be able to visit Nkinguro, a village on the western border of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, to meet the women who own and operate the new bike shop. Experience the shop at work as you learn how these inspiring entrepreneurs have partnered with A&K Philanthropy to repair and resell second-hand bicycles as a means to support their families, broaden the community’s mobility, and sustain a host of community outreach programs. Guests have the option to grab a bike and ride out to explore the village with a guide.

A&K can include a visit to Nkinguro Village on a Tailor Made Journey to Uganda. Contact our offices in Australia, the UK or the USA for assistance in creating an itinerary just for you.
