MONDE VILLAGE COMMUNITY SCHOOL
For two million years, the five cataracts of Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls have roared into the gorge below, the unrestrained mist giving rise to the much older Kololo name of Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke that Thunders). Since the 19th century, the falls have drawn royals, celebrities and throngs of visitors from all over the globe.
Yet with all the wealth these visitors bring, little makes its way to the small, rural communities that surround the tourist hub of Victoria Falls Town. This poverty is clearly evident in Monde Village, a family-centered homestead of traditional thatched mud huts mixed with brick and tin-roofed structures. Here, the village’s children gather to learn in their humble school with little in the way of furnishings or resources.
In 2024, AKP partnered with the people of Monde to provide their schoolchildren with 50 desks. Building on this modest start, AKP is making big plans with the community to install LifeStraw water filters and build additional classroom blocks.
